The upgrade pressure is mostly marketing. Here's the honest decision tree:
- Shared is fine until it isn't. One brochure site, a small blog, a low-traffic store? Stay. You're paying $3–8/mo and someone else patches the server. The moment you feel pain is usually noisy neighbors or CPU limits during traffic spikes.
- VPS is the real workhorse. Predictable resources, root access, host multiple sites. The catch: someone has to be the sysadmin. That's either you (unmanaged) or your wallet (managed).
- Cloud (hourly, autoscaling) shines for spiky or growing workloads and infra-as-code. For a static traffic pattern it's often just a pricier VPS with a nicer dashboard.
- Dedicated = you need the whole machine (heavy DB, compliance, huge sustained load). Rarely the answer for a website; often the answer for an application.
Rule of thumb: upgrade when a specific, measured limit hurts you — not because a plan comparison page made you feel poor.
