cPanel's per-account licensing turned a lot of small hosts and self-hosters toward alternatives. Quick honest rundown for a single VPS:

DirectAdmin — closest to "cPanel but cheaper." Light, stable, cheap personal tier, boring in the good way. Great if you just want the familiar workflow. 🟢
CyberPanel — free, built on OpenLiteSpeed, so you get LiteSpeed caching out of the box. Fantastic price (zero) and fast, but the UI has rough edges and the occasional upgrade adventure. Best if you like tinkering. ⚡
Plesk — the most polished, best Windows support, strong for agencies and Docker/dev workflows. Also the priciest of the three. 💼
Wildcards: aaPanel, CloudPanel (great for PHP/NVMe stacks, no email), or just going panel-less with Docker/Caddy if you're comfortable in a terminal.

We never ran cPanel — our stack was built around DirectAdmin from the start. Our clients get a clean panel for email, databases, and one-click WordPress installs without the license bloat. Why pay for a brand name when DirectAdmin handles everything a small business or agency actually needs?

We went straight to Enhance when we launched our shared hosting line. No cPanel, no Plesk for Linux — just a modern control panel that actually handles multi-tenant isolation properly. The per-account resource controls are miles ahead of what we saw in legacy panels. For Windows hosting we keep Plesk since it fits the .NET/IIS workflow, but cPanel never had a place in our infrastructure.

We went with CyberPanel + OpenLiteSpeed for shared hosting — free, fast, and our SG latency stays low because the stack isn't dragging a bloated panel behind it. For VPS customers we offer root access and let them install aaPanel or HestiaCP if they want a GUI. Most don't bother.
