Two VPS plans, identical specs on paper, wildly different in real life. Here's why, and what "managed" actually buys you.
The specs lie because of the neighbors. A vCPU is a share of a physical core. On an oversold node, your neighbor's runaway process shows up in your top as steal time (st). Check it:
vmstat 1 5 # watch the 'st' column
Consistently high steal = oversold host, not your code. Same reason a plan feels fast on one node and sluggish after a rebuild in another region.
Unmanaged = root access and a bare OS. You handle updates, security, backups, the 2am reboot. Cheapest, most control, most responsibility.
Managed = you're paying for someone else's on-call. Worth it when downtime costs more than the price difference, or when you'd rather build than babysit.
Be honest about which kind of person you are — that's the whole decision.
